The integration of digital number plates and the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) is proving highly effective in combating vehicle theft in Uganda. According to police reports, out of 37 stolen vehicles recently tracked, an impressive 34 were successfully recovered, translating to a recovery rate of over 90%.

Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma stated that these figures demonstrate the advancing capabilities of the ITMS. This technology-driven platform combines digital number plates with sophisticated tracking and monitoring systems, significantly enhancing the police’s ability to respond to and investigate criminal activities.

Initially introduced to improve road security and vehicle oversight, the ITMS is now a critical component in crime prevention and resolution. Kituuma emphasized that the system’s success is amplified by public cooperation. “When people report in time, it enables police to respond to scenes of crime promptly,” he noted, explaining that timely reports increase the chances of apprehending suspects and preventing the completion of offenses.

Last year, the ITMS was instrumental in recovering over 50 stolen vehicles. In one notable case, the system’s tracking features were used to locate a vehicle connected to the murder of businessman Anthony Mutinisa. While technology is a powerful tool, officials stress that human vigilance and prompt reporting remain crucial elements in this fight.

As the ITMS network expands and collaboration strengthens, authorities anticipate even higher recovery rates. Experts suggest continued investment in training, infrastructure, and cybersecurity will be vital to maintaining these positive outcomes. The success underscores how digital innovations are revolutionizing policing and enhancing public safety.
