Access to clean water has long been a critical issue in Uganda’s Busoga sub-region, with increasing populations straining existing resources. The Anadolu Foundation, led by Iddi Menya, is stepping in to alleviate this challenge through a series of strategic water projects.

In Luuka District, the Nanvunano A Village, previously reliant on a single borehole serving over 800 people, has seen significant improvement. The existing scarcity forced many, particularly women and children, to travel long distances for water, impacting health, education, and household stability. A new borehole drilled at Busiiro Muslim Primary School now provides safe water for learners and the wider community.

Menya highlighted the fundamental importance of water, stating, “Water is life.” He emphasized its necessity for both domestic use and religious practices, such as the ablution required for Muslim prayers. The foundation encouraged the school to ensure community access, a move welcomed by headteacher Ibrahim Mapaalu, who noted the positive impact on both learning and prayer activities.

The foundation’s reach extends to Kamuli District, where a new borehole in Namaganda-Buliso now serves residents, improving sanitation and reducing the daily burden of water collection. Similarly, Jinja District has benefited from a modern solar-powered water system at Busedde Seed Secondary School. This innovation is projected to drastically cut the school’s water expenditure, previously around Shs4 million per term, while guaranteeing a consistent clean water supply.

Local leaders in all affected districts have urged communities to actively participate in the maintenance of the new facilities, forming water user committees to ensure their longevity and proper usage. These interventions by the Anadolu Foundation are anticipated to yield substantial improvements in health, school attendance, and overall community well-being across the Busoga region.
