Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Shaun Evans has been cleared by FIFA following an investigation into a hand gesture he made during a recent match. Evans was seen forming an inverted ‘OK’ sign, a gesture that can unfortunately be associated with white supremacy, although it also has a common, innocent meaning.

Evans stated he was completely unaware of making the movement and vehemently denied any intention to communicate any message, affiliation, or belief. He explained that video evidence revealed he had, in fact, repeated the movement multiple times while holding a pen, suggesting it was an “involuntary, subconscious twitch.”

The incident occurred during FIFA’s pre-match global coverage, whichBriefly focuses on the officials, including the VAR team. Social media erupted with speculation following the broadcast. However, FIFA’s disciplinary code was examined, and the governing body concluded there was “no evidence of breaches.”

“The coverage following this incident simply does not reflect who I am,” Evans said in a statement issued through FIFA. “Of course, I understand how the gesture has been interpreted and I regret this, however I want to be very clear and categorically say that I did not knowingly or deliberately make the hand symbol suggested.”

Following the widespread speculation, FIFA adjusted its pre-match broadcast protocol. In subsequent matches, the VAR officials were shown facing their monitors rather than posing for the camera, though their names continued to be displayed.

Evans, an experienced official who has been on FIFA’s list of referees since 2017 and officiated at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is now available for selection for the remainder of the tournament. He expressed that officiating at the World Cup is the greatest honor of his career.
