The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has provided an updated count of candidates slated to sit for national examinations in 2026. As of June 15, a total of 1,403,169 candidates have registered across all three examination levels: PLE, UCE, and UACE.

Jennifer Kalule, UNEB’s principal public relations officer, stated that the provisional figures represent a significant number of learners preparing for these crucial assessments. The breakdown reveals that the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) accounts for the largest share, with 844,341 candidates. Among these, females slightly outnumber males at 52.6 percent.

For the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), provisional registration stands at 401,509 candidates, with females also forming the majority at 53.2 percent. The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) has 157,319 candidates registered so far, with males marginally leading in this category at 51.4 percent.

UNEB has also highlighted the participation of government-sponsored students through programs like Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE). A substantial portion of PLE and UCE candidates are enrolled under these government initiatives.

The registration process is still open, with the normal registration period set to close on June 30, 2026. A late registration window will follow in July, incurring surcharges for candidates who miss the initial deadline. UNEB reminds heads of centers to ensure all eligible candidates are registered and advises parents and candidates to meticulously verify their biodata information.

The prescribed registration fees remain at Shs34,000 for PLE, Shs164,000 for UCE, and Shs186,000 for UACE. UNEB sternly warns against schools imposing additional unapproved “UNEB fees.”
