The Ministry of Health in Uganda has alerted the public to a concerning trend of fraudsters preying on travelers by offering fake Ebola-free certificates. These criminals are exploiting fear surrounding the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) to extort money from unsuspecting individuals seeking to travel abroad or secure employment.

The ministry has made it unequivocally clear that no “Ebola-free certificates” are necessary for departing Uganda, nor are they a requirement for visa applications or entry into any foreign country. This clarification comes after reports surfaced of individuals and groups promoting purported Ebola testing and certification services.

Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health Services, stated that Ebola testing is strictly reserved for individuals exhibiting symptoms consistent with the disease or those who have been identified as contacts of confirmed cases, following a thorough clinical and epidemiological assessment. “Testing is only recommended for individuals who develop symptoms consistent with Ebola Virus Disease or those identified as contacts of confirmed Ebola cases following a clinical and epidemiological assessment,” he explained.

The ministry urges the public to exercise caution and avoid these fraudulent schemes. They encourage reliance on official health systems and government communication channels for accurate information. Uganda has recently reported no new Ebola cases for ten consecutive days, a sign of progress in containment efforts. Entebbe International Airport has also seen enhanced screening capabilities with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), including new thermal scanners and isolation facilities.
