Uganda’s healthcare system is grappling with a persistent shortage of blood for transfusions, putting countless lives at risk.
The Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) reports that approximately 10 percent of Ugandans requiring urgent blood transfusions do not receive it due to insufficient supply. Annually, the country needs around 500,000 units of blood, but last year’s collection fell short at 439,000 units, well below the World Health Organization’s recommended benchmark.
A significant contributor to this deficit is the country’s heavy reliance on students and pupils, who account for about 80 percent of blood donations. This dependence leads to acute shortages during school holidays when donation levels plummet.
Many adults remain hesitant to donate blood, often stemming from unfounded fears about potential health complications or a reluctance to discover their HIV status, as testing is mandatory for all donors. Concerns about the alleged illicit sale of donated blood by some health workers also contribute to public apprehension.
Blood is a life-saving resource critical for treating anemia, supporting mothers with childbirth complications, and aiding victims of accidents and trauma. The current blood scarcity means that lives that could have been saved are tragically lost.
There is an urgent call for the public, particularly adults, to step up and fulfill this vital civic duty. Additionally, the Ministry of Health and UBTS must intensify public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the safety, eligibility, and importance of blood donation. Assurances that donated blood is not being sold and adequate government funding for UBTS are also crucial to ensure a stable and sufficient blood supply.
