The Tunisian national football team has made a swift change in leadership, dismissing head coach Sabri Lamouchi after a disappointing 5-1 loss to Sweden in their opening World Cup match. Lamouchi, who was appointed in January on a contract extending to 2028, becomes the first coaching casualty of the tournament.

Taking the helm for the remainder of Tunisia’s World Cup campaign is fellow Frenchman Hervé Renard. Renard is a well-respected figure in African football, having guided Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations titles.

His recent experience includes coaching Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup, where he famously led them to a victory against eventual champions Argentina during the group stage. Renard is expected to join the squad in Monterrey shortly.

Under Lamouchi’s tenure, Tunisia secured only one victory in five matches, a narrow 1-0 win against Haiti. Prior to the World Cup, they suffered losses to Austria (1-0) and a significant 5-0 thrashing by Belgium in warm-up games.

The Tunisian Football Federation stated that Renard will lead the team until the conclusion of their World Cup involvement, with discussions planned for a potential long-term collaboration following the tournament.

Tunisia still has upcoming fixtures against Japan and the Netherlands in the group stage. The team will be hoping Renard’s guidance can bring a change in fortunes on the pitch.
