Former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has advised Ugandans against living in fear of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, emphasizing that no person is immortal.
Ssemujju’s strong statement follows reports of Gen. Kainerugaba threatening to arrest him. This alleged threat reportedly stemmed from a social media exchange where Ssemujju criticized the military chief’s actions.
According to Ssemujju, while Gen. Kainerugaba may project an image of immense power, ultimate authority over life and death rests only with God. He underscored that individuals who resort to intimidation, torture, or unlawful arrests are themselves subject to the same human frailties and eventualities.
These remarks surface amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged abduction and mistreatment of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. Lukwago, representing jailed politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, was reportedly seeking to serve court documents on Gen. Kainerugaba, who is being sued by Besigye over alleged roles in the opposition leader’s arrest in Kenya and subsequent online threats.
Ssemujju remained unbowed by the alleged threats, urging the public to remain vigilant against unchecked abuses of power. He stressed that public officials, including the CDF, are accountable to the citizens and must operate within the bounds of the law.
Drawing from personal experience, Ssemujju recounted an instance involving former Security Minister Gen. Elly Tumwine, who had issued threats but has since passed away, while Ssemujju continues to live. He stated, “Muhoozi can arrest me, but will he become immortal? Will he never fall sick?” Ssemujju concluded by asserting his refusal to live in fear, regardless of the consequences, as he believes all leaders are ultimately answerable.
