SpaceX, the pioneering aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing Amazon as the fifth most valuable firm globally. This surge in valuation follows a dramatic increase in SpaceX’s stock price shortly after its public listing on the Nasdaq exchange.

Following its listing, which was the largest ever recorded, SpaceX’s share price has reportedly climbed by over 50%. This impressive growth has propelled the company’s valuation to approximately $2.78 trillion, eclipsing Amazon’s current worth of about $2.66 trillion.

The company’s ascendant market value is partly attributed to its strategic acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion. This move will see SpaceX take over Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, which is known for its artificial intelligence coding agent.

Investors are showing strong enthusiasm for SpaceX’s ambitious vision, which includes plans to deploy AI data centers in space and contribute to the colonization of Mars. The company’s initial public offering raised $85.7 billion, a figure that also cemented Musk’s status as the world’s first trillionaire. Since its debut on the public market at $135 per share, the stock has risen to $209.

Despite its soaring market capitalization, SpaceX’s financial performance starkly contrasts with Amazon’s. While Amazon reported a profit of $30.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026 and recorded $716.9 billion in sales for 2025, SpaceX experienced a loss of $4.3 billion in the same quarter and generated $18.67 billion in revenue for 2025. Analysts are closely watching to see if SpaceX’s current high valuation is sustainable, given the inherent uncertainties in future earnings.

Investors appear to be betting on SpaceX’s future potential, driven by its work in reusable rocket manufacturing, the deployment of Starlink internet satellites, and its expanding presence in the artificial intelligence sector through its xAI division. The recent acquisition of Cursor, a company whose technology automates code writing, is a significant move to bolster its AI capabilities and compete with rivals like OpenAI.
