Authorities in Buikwe District have taken a father and his co-wife into custody following the death of their two-year-old daughter, Innocent Sonko. The child was reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including beatings and burns from hot water, leading to her demise.
The discovery was made on Saturday, June 13, at the suspects’ residence in Gimbo Cell. Police indicate that Innocent had been living with the couple for approximately two weeks prior to the incident.
Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson, Hellen Butoto, stated that preliminary investigations point towards extreme torture as the cause of death. “Investigations into the matter are ongoing as the suspects remain in police custody. Preliminary findings indicate that they tortured the child and poured hot water on her, resulting in her death. We strongly condemn such actions,” Butoto said.
The police plan to present the suspects in court once their investigation is concluded. The child’s body has been transported to Kawolo General Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community. Kiyindi Town Council Mayor Amir Kiggundu expressed dismay, questioning how such abuse could go unnoticed. He emphasized the crucial role of neighbors in reporting suspected child mistreatment and urged parents to remain actively involved in their children’s welfare.
Residents like Halima Nagujja have condemned the alleged cruelty, calling it inhumane. The community is united in calling for greater vigilance and collective responsibility in safeguarding children. Mayor Kiggundu added that this tragedy should serve as a stark reminder of the duty to protect children.
