The contest for the vacant Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat is reaching a fever pitch as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the National Unity Platform (NUP) intensify their campaigns in the final week before polling.
Senior political figures from both parties have been actively campaigning on the islands, urging residents to support their respective candidates. The NRM’s campaign is spearheaded by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, who has been engaging with local communities including boda boda riders, fishermen, and market vendors. Kasolo emphasized the NRM government’s capacity to address the district’s development challenges if their candidate, Aidah Nabayiga, is elected.
Bujumba County MP Willy Lugoloobi acknowledged past internal party divisions as a reason for previous electoral setbacks but expressed confidence that these issues have been resolved, positioning the NRM for victory this time.
On the other hand, NUP chief mobiliser Habib Buwembo is also leading intensified efforts to secure a win for the opposition. Residents of Kalangala have voiced concerns about key infrastructure issues, particularly the poor state of roads, which they say hinders business, access to services, and the transportation of goods. They are calling for their next representative to prioritize these pressing concerns.
As the campaigns enter their final stretch, accusations of fuelling political hostility have been exchanged between the NRM and NUP, raising concerns about the upcoming election’s conduct. Security agencies are appealing for calm and urging all parties to avoid actions that could disrupt the electoral process, as the island district prepares to choose its new Woman MP.
