President Yoweri Museveni, addressing army officers at the Senior Staff College-Kimaka in Jinja, critiqued past African leaders for their inaction during the colonial era, attributing some of the continent’s current challenges to their “selfishness.”

He emphasized that for Africa to develop and stand on par with Western nations, two key historical missions must be pursued: prosperity and security. The first, ensuring prosperity, hinges on economic integration, which Museveni noted the National Resistance Movement has championed for decades. He urged the younger generation of leaders to prioritize this over superficial interests.

Regarding security, the President highlighted that safeguarding Africa from future threats necessitates political integration. He pointed out that without it, individual nations lack the capacity for advanced defense operations, such as space programs or naval capabilities, due to arbitrary colonial borders. Museveni expressed concern that the ambition of some leaders to remain “big fish in small ponds” hinders progress on East African integration.

Museveni also touched upon land shortage as a consequence of underdevelopment, where populations are primarily reliant on agriculture. He dismissed identity politics based on tribes and religion as “ideological bankruptcy,” calling it the “politics of parasites.”

He further underscored the importance of patriotism and Pan-Africanism in fostering market opportunities. For wealth and job creation, he identified four key sectors in Uganda: commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The Commandant of the Senior Staff College, Brig Gen. Kabango Michael, commended President Museveni’s leadership for guiding Uganda toward peace and stability. The current course includes 52 students from Uganda and 13 other African nations.
