Ibanda District is on edge following the alleged murders of two women, including a wife and her neighbour, in what appears to be a domestic dispute turned violent. The suspect, whose identity is being withheld by authorities as they pursue him, reportedly committed the double homicide in the early hours of Monday before going on the run.

According to reports, the suspect first alerted a relative of his wife, Phionah Nsimenta, by phone, stating he had killed her and instructing the relative to collect the body. Upon arriving at the scene, family members and residents discovered the body of a neighbour, Oliver Nalugo, first. They then proceeded to Nsimenta’s home, where police were called to force entry into the locked house.

Inside, Nsimenta was found deceased in a pool of blood, with her two young children sleeping nearby, tragically unaware of the violence that had unfolded. Neighbours have indicated that the couple had a history of frequent domestic quarrels, with local leaders reportedly intervening on multiple occasions to mediate. The community is now expressing growing concern over safety and an increase in both criminal activity and domestic conflicts.

Local security agencies, including the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), have launched an active manhunt for the suspect. They are appealing to the public for information that could aid in his apprehension, while also cautioning against vigilante justice. Ibanda’s Deputy Resident District Commissioner confirmed the ongoing investigation and expressed confidence that the suspect would be caught, noting that he is still making phone calls that may provide leads.

These tragic events highlight ongoing concerns about violent crime and domestic-related fatalities in Uganda. The police’s annual crime report for 2025 indicated a slight decrease in overall homicide and traffic-related deaths compared to the previous year.
