Concerns are escalating regarding the detention of prominent opposition figure and lawyer Erias Lukwago. His lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, reported on Tuesday that attempts to discover Lukwago’s location and condition have been met with significant obstacles from various law enforcement and security agencies.

Sseggona described a frustrating pursuit across multiple institutions, including the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), where officials allegedly denied knowledge of Lukwago’s detention or refused to formally accept complaints. “We were unable to obtain a formal record or reference that could help us establish where he was being held,” Sseggona stated.

The lawyer also highlighted anxieties about Lukwago’s health, noting his need for prescribed medication, specific dietary requirements, and access to medical care. Sseggona further alleged, though unconfirmed by press time, that Lukwago had faced mistreatment in custody.

This situation, according to Sseggona, represents a critical test for Uganda’s constitutional rights and the rule of law. He criticized what he perceived as a growing impunity and a reluctance from institutions like Parliament and the police to challenge powerful entities, fostering an atmosphere of fear.

Appealing directly to President Museveni, Sseggona urged intervention to ensure state institutions operate lawfully and respect citizens’ rights. He questioned the independence of Uganda’s democratic institutions, suggesting they have been weakened by political pressure.

The developments have amplified existing concerns among opposition supporters and human rights advocates regarding the treatment of political figures. Human rights organizations have previously called for greater transparency in arrests and detentions, particularly in politically charged cases.

As of the publication, authorities had not officially responded to Sseggona’s allegations. Lukwago’s family and legal team continue their efforts to ascertain his condition and location, demanding immediate access and disclosure of the legal basis for his detention. This situation intensifies the public discourse on civil liberties and constitutional rights in Uganda.
