Marvin Kibirige employed a strategic and cautious approach on Tuesday to seize the first-round lead at the inaugural Pro-Tee Series by MTN event held at Entebbe Club. Firing an impressive six birdies on a challenging par-71 course, Kibirige posted a score of three-under-par 68, giving him a one-shot advantage over his closest competitors.
Kibirige, representing Mary Louise Memorial Golf Club, expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting it’s been some time since he held an opening-day lead in a local professional golf tournament. His last taste of such an achievement was during a leg of the Pearl of Africa (POA) Series in 2025.
The Entebbe course presented significant challenges due to prevailing drought conditions, testing the players’ mettle. Kibirige acknowledged the difficulty but managed to sink birdies on the par-5s (Holes 1, 11, and 18), the par-3 (Hole 12), and two par-4s (Holes 3 and 14). While his putting was strong, he struggled with his long irons due to the course’s turf.
This tournament serves as a crucial warm-up for Kibirige as he prepares to rejoin the Professional Golfers Tour of India (PGTI) next month. He emphasized treating the event as practice to hone his competitive mindset and physical readiness.
Despite a few setbacks, including three bogeys on the par-4 Hole 5 and the par-3 Holes 8 and 16 where he encountered wind issues and missed greens, Kibirige plans to maintain his current playing style for the remaining rounds. He faces pressure from Rodell Gaita and Vincent Byamukama, who are tied for second place at two-under-par 69.
