Authorities in Kasese District have launched an investigation following a reported mob attack that left 17 cattle injured. The incident took place in Nyamatungo Village, Kinyamaseke Town Council, and highlights ongoing friction between agriculturalists and cattle herders.

According to preliminary police reports, the cattle, belonging to Georgia Kakuzanisa and Alex Musinguzi, were allegedly grazing in a maize garden. A group of approximately 30 individuals, reportedly armed with pangas, spears, and arrows, descended upon the animals and inflicted injuries.

The herdsmen accompanying the cattle managed to escape unharmed, but the animals were left behind during the assault. Seventeen cattle sustained injuries during the attack.

Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that the matter was reported to Nyakatonzi Police Station. He stated that police officers have visited and documented the scene as part of their active investigation to identify the motive and apprehend those responsible.

This incident exacerbates concerns about recurring conflicts between farmers and livestock keepers in the area, which have previously led to property damage and instances of vigilantism. Police are appealing to residents to resolve disputes through legal channels and report grievances to the authorities instead of resorting to violence.

“People should desist from acts of lawlessness and should always report incidents or their concerns to the police and other relevant offices rather than taking the law into their own hands,” Maate urged. As of the report’s filing, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
