A joint team of environmental experts from Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment has deployed to the picturesque Lake Bunyonyi to investigate recent, unexplained changes in its water colour. This initiative, spanning three days, is a direct response to growing concerns about the lake’s water quality among residents, tourism stakeholders, and local officials.

The inspection is spearheaded by Lilian Idrakua, the Commissioner for Water Quality Management, and comprises specialists from key agencies including the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), and various departments focused on environmental support and water services.

Lake Bunyonyi, renowned as a premier tourist attraction and a vital water source for numerous local communities, has recently displayed unsettling colour variations. These shifts have triggered apprehensions regarding the ecological health of the lake and its potential effect on the delicate tourism industry.

The expert team will undertake a battery of tests to pinpoint the root causes of these colour changes. Potential factors under scrutiny include pollution from various sources, the proliferation of algae blooms (which can drastically alter water appearance and composition), and other environmental stressors that could compromise water quality, public health, and the economic activities reliant on the lake.

Local leaders have expressed their support for the assessment, emphasizing that the findings will be crucial for developing effective strategies to preserve the lake’s integrity and secure the livelihoods of the communities that depend on its resources. A final report, outlining the survey’s conclusions and providing actionable recommendations, is anticipated once the assessment concludes.
