The 16th edition of the ICPAU Youth and Junior Woodball Championship showcased impressive talent at Kyambogo Peace Park, with schools like Busukuma and Mpoma Girls leading the charge. The championship, originally slated for Koboko, was moved to Kampala due to public health concerns but still attracted 501 participants, exceeding last year’s 400.
Busukuma displayed remarkable consistency, securing the Boys Team title and having multiple players among the top finishers. The Primary Boys Singles saw an unusual three-way tie, with Darry Dain Ssendege of Airforce, Darius Kimbowa, and Ramathan Jjuuko from Busukuma all recording 31 strokes. In the girls’ primary category, Martha Nalunkuuma of Santa Maria Junior School and Prossy Nakimuli from Busukuma tied for first place with 34 strokes.
Mpoma Girls, led by Joy Mwanja Namuli’s winning round of 55 strokes in the Ladies Singles, also clinched the Ladies Team title with 243 strokes. Mengo Secondary School also had a strong showing, with Joshua Muwanguzi winning the Men Singles event and the school taking the Boys Team crown.
Uganda Woodball Federation president Paul Mark Kayongo lauded the championship’s role in nurturing young talent for future national teams. He also announced 16 players selected for residential camp ahead of the World Cup in Malaysia. ICPAU injected Shs21 million into the event, highlighting its commitment to promoting the sport and instilling values like discipline among students.
The focus now shifts to the upcoming Ball Games II Championships in Gulu next month.
