Order has been restored along the Lira-Soroti Highway following a protest by motorcycle taxi operators (boda boda) on Monday. The demonstration led to the temporary closure of the crucial transport link, causing significant disruptions.

Reports indicate that the riders blocked the highway to express their dissatisfaction with a Shs35,000 registration fee, which they deem controversial. Some operators had reportedly been arrested for non-compliance with this fee, sparking the wider protest.

The blockade affected a key artery connecting Uganda to neighboring countries like Kenya and South Sudan via the eastern route. Security agencies were compelled to intervene to clear the road and normalize traffic flow.

Police have condemned the protest, with North Kyoga regional police spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema stating that the approach taken by the riders was “uncalled for.” He emphasized that alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, such as engaging with relevant authorities, should have been pursued.

Investigations are now underway, and the 15 individuals arrested are expected to face charges based on their level of involvement. Police are compiling case files and will consult with the Resident Chief State Attorney to determine the specific charges.

Lira Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole refuted social media claims of businesses being burnt or the city shutting down, assuring the public that calm was restored quickly and business operations resumed normally.

City authorities, including Mayor Sam Atul, defended the digital registration exercise, explaining its purpose is to enhance security and eliminate duplicate rider records, thereby streamlining operations and combating crime.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions between some boda boda operators and city officials regarding the registration process and associated fees. Police have cautioned against future lawless actions, urging grievances to be addressed through legal channels.
