Law enforcement agencies in the Kampala Metropolitan East and Mukono regions have conducted a significant crackdown, leading to the arrest of 40 suspects and the recovery of 16 motorcycles. The operations focused on alleged criminal hotspots and illegal workshops in areas such as Kireka, Bweyogerere, and Bukerere.
One key operation targeted a suspected motorcycle reassembly garage in Kireka, prompted by intelligence suggesting it was a hub for dismantling stolen motorcycles. Twelve men were arrested at this location, and the 16 motorcycles seized are currently undergoing verification of their ownership and registration status. These vehicles have been taken to Jinja Road Police Station as evidence.
Further operations took place in various zones within Kira Division and Mukono District, specifically targeting individuals believed to be involved in street robberies and narcotic substance abuse. In these areas, 28 more suspects, including three women, were taken into custody. Seized during these raids were various substances suspected to be narcotics.
All arrested individuals are being held by the police and will face legal proceedings. These recent actions are part of the police’s ongoing commitment to disrupting criminal activities, recovering stolen property, and enhancing the overall safety of the metropolitan area.
This intensified enforcement comes as Uganda Police reports a general decrease in crime rates, with a 10.2 percent drop in reported cases in 2025 compared to the previous year. Despite this positive trend, motorcycle theft, violent crimes, and organized criminal activity remain significant concerns for law enforcement officials. The police attribute the overall crime reduction to enhanced prevention strategies and more effective enforcement operations.
