A devastating incident has occurred in Brazil’s São Paulo state, where a young woman lost her life during a rope-jumping activity. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, was participating in the extreme sport when instructors reportedly failed to secure her safety cord before she jumped from the “Skeleton Bridge”.
Witness footage captured the moment Rodrigues de Freitas was assisted to the edge of the abandoned bridge and then pushed off. Tragically, onlookers were heard screaming for the instructors to attach her cord as she fell approximately 40 meters (130 feet) to the ground below. Emergency services were present but pronounced her dead at the scene.
Three men, believed to be the instructors involved, have been arrested. Police are investigating the possibility of homicide with eventual intent, a charge that implies recklessness rather than direct malice. The company offering the rope-jumping services indicated the instructors were from a private firm, though some reports suggest they may have been informal practitioners.
Rope jumping, distinct from bungee jumping, typically utilizes low-stretch climbing ropes for a pendulum-like swing. The location of the incident, the “Skeleton Bridge,” has been abandoned for years and is under federal government responsibility.
The City Hall of Limeira has announced its intention to sue the federal government, citing a failure to adequately manage the bridge. They stated that they had been actively seeking action from federal agencies regarding the state of the bridge. Rodrigues de Freitas was buried the day after the accident.
