Operatives from the Special Forces Command (SFC) have arrested former Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, from his home in Wakaliga, Rubaga Division. The dramatic incident unfolded early Monday morning when Lukwago reported that his residence was surrounded by the elite military unit.

Lukwago described encountering multiple vehicles, including “drones” (minibuses often used by security forces), and personnel in both plainclothes and uniform positioned around his property. He stated he was unable to leave his home and was unaware of the specific reason for the extensive security presence or what they were seeking.

Witnesses observed SFC operatives, transported in drone vans and a police patrol vehicle, scaling the perimeter wall to gain access to the compound. The operation has raised questions regarding its timing and purpose.

The arrest occurs amidst significant developments in the treason and national security case where Lukwago is serving as the lead defense counsel for Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused. The defense team, including Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua, had previously boycotted an evidence review session due to access restrictions at Luzira Upper Prison. The accused have also refused to attend court proceedings in person.

Furthermore, Lukwago’s legal team has been attempting to serve High Court papers on the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, related to a petition filed by Besigye and Lutale concerning alleged social media threats. While the Attorney General has been served, attempts to reach Gen. Muhoozi and other military officials have reportedly been unsuccessful.

As of the time of reporting, neither the police nor the army had issued an official statement clarifying the circumstances or justification for the SFC’s operation at Lukwago’s residence. The situation has fueled speculation about a potential link to the ongoing legal challenges.
