Erias Lukwago, former Mayor of Kampala and president of the opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was reportedly arrested from his bedroom by armed soldiers early on Monday morning. His wife, Zawedde Lubwama Lukwago, narrated the harrowing experience, stating that the soldiers, identified as SFC personnel, cut their way over the fence and gained entry to their Wakaliga residence.

According to Mrs. Lukwago, the soldiers knocked on their door, and upon opening it, she found many soldiers in SFC uniforms, led by a commander not in uniform. She reported attempting to resist their entry into the bedroom but was overpowered. The soldiers then allegedly forced their way in, demanded Mr. Lukwago’s phone, and searched the house, finding nothing incriminating.

Mrs. Lukwago expressed dismay at the manner of the arrest, asserting that her husband, a lawyer, would have responded to any lawful summons. She equated the incident to “Amin-like days,” warning that such actions by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba signal a regressive political climate.

Lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona, representing Mr. Lukwago, condemned the operation as unlawful, categorizing it as a kidnapping with intent to harm. Ssegona criticized the government for not using established legal procedures and cautioned President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi about the “seeds of hatred” they are planting among Ugandans, warning of future unrest.

The arrest occurred as Mr. Lukwago was reportedly preparing to serve court documents on Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba in a treason-related case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye. Authorities had not officially commented on the arrest or announced any charges by Monday afternoon.

This incident follows a series of strong social media posts by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba targeting Dr. Kizza Besigye. Mr. Lukwago has a history of legal challenges but has never been convicted of any offense.
