The Uganda Muslim Lawyers Association (UMLA) has publicly condemned the recent arrest and detention of prominent advocate and political figure, Senior Counsel Erias Lukwago. In a statement released on June 15, 2026, the association expressed deep concern over reports of a pre-dawn raid on Lukwago’s residence and his subsequent detention.

UMLA is demanding that authorities immediately reveal Lukwago’s location and the specific legal grounds for his arrest. The association emphasized the critical role lawyers play as officers of the court and warned that any form of intimidation or harassment against them poses a threat to the entire justice system.

Further adding to their concerns are widely circulated images allegedly depicting Lukwago in a distressed state while blindfolded. UMLA stated that such imagery, particularly if disseminated by senior officials, can undermine public trust in the administration of justice and create an intimidating atmosphere.

The association underscored the importance of both constitutional and Islamic principles regarding the sanctity of the home and due process. They cited Qur’anic injunctions and prophetic teachings in their call for adherence to justice and respect for human dignity.

UMLA urged the Uganda Law Society, the Judiciary, Parliament, civil society organizations, and religious leaders to speak out in defense of constitutionalism and the rule of law. They stressed that protecting lawyers in their professional duties is not a privilege but a fundamental safeguard for all citizens seeking justice.

Authorities had not issued an official response to these allegations at the time of publication.
