The sight of lush mango trees laden with ripe fruit usually signifies a joyous season in northern Uganda. However, this year, the temptation of sweet mangoes has led to a disturbing trend of children suffering serious injuries from falls.
Hospitals across the region are reporting an uptick in admissions of young patients who have fallen from mango trees. One poignant case is that of seven-year-old Fibi from Oyam District. After school, she reportedly climbed a mango tree, driven by hunger, and fell while reaching for a high branch. Her mother stated that Fibi, now admitted to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, was unconscious for three days and is experiencing difficulty speaking.
Fibi’s situation is not isolated. Aboke Health Centre IV has treated another child for multiple fractures after a fall from a neighbor’s mango tree. In Aleka Sub-county, a local leader’s son broke both arms in a similar incident. Between June 13 and June 14 alone, Lira Regional Referral Hospital admitted at least three children for tree-related falls.
These accidents underscore the challenging realities for children in rural communities, where climbing trees is often a means to access food, earn money, or simply engage in play. Medical professionals are issuing stern warnings about the potential consequences, including severe head trauma, fractures, and permanent disabilities.
Community leaders and health workers are now advocating for preventative measures. These include using long sticks to harvest fruit and pruning trees to make them safer. They also emphasize the importance of educating children about the inherent dangers of climbing tall trees. While the mangoes offer sweetness, the risks associated with their acquisition are starkly evident, leaving families to grapple with the painful lessons of a season that has brought more than just fruit.
