The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has issued a stern warning, announcing its intention to pursue legal action both within Uganda and on the international stage. This move comes in response to what the ULS describes as escalating intimidation and interference faced by legal practitioners.

During a press briefing in Kampala, ULS representatives stated they expect a definitive response from the government and relevant institutions within a 24-hour timeframe. Failure to address their grievances, they cautioned, will compel the society to initiate legal proceedings in multiple jurisdictions.

This ultimatum follows a period of heightened tension between the legal fraternity and security forces, particularly after the recent arrest of senior counsel Erias Lukwago. The legal community views such actions as a direct threat to the independence of the judiciary and the broader administration of justice.

While expressing confidence in Uganda’s judiciary, ULS leaders indicated they are prepared to explore regional and international mechanisms. Options under consideration include petitions to bodies such as the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, especially concerning violations protected under the African Charter.

The society highlighted particular concerns for the safety of lawyers handling politically sensitive cases, including those related to terrorism. They are demanding assurances that all participants in the justice system will be protected while fulfilling their constitutional duties.

The ULS stressed that its actions are not confrontational but aimed at safeguarding constitutional governance, judicial independence, and public trust in the justice system. This latest warning reflects growing anxieties among lawyers and civil society about increasing interference in judicial processes and the expanded role of security agencies.
