Joshua Lubwama, a prominent figure in Ugandan football, known for his midfield prowess with URA FC, has revealed a deeply personal aspect of his life: his daughter’s diagnosis of a hearing impairment.
Lubwama, who also holds a degree in Community Psychology, shared his story on ‘The Game of Life’ podcast. The diagnosis, received when his daughter was nearing her first birthday, initially plunged him into a period of disbelief and profound sadness. He recounted the moment doctors informed him, describing it as one of the loneliest times of his life, struggling to reconcile his prayers with the medical reality.
His journey prior to this challenge was already marked by overcoming doubts, from early skepticism about his physical ability to play football to pursuing higher education alongside his sporting career. Inspired by his mother, Lubwama chose to study Community Psychology, a path that has allowed him to support teammates and others facing personal struggles, earning him the nickname “mental health” among his peers.
However, facing his own family’s crisis brought a new dimension to his understanding of resilience. Despite his background in psychology, he initially found it difficult to speak about his daughter’s condition, with his professional performance suffering. He worried about her future, her schooling, and her ability to achieve her dreams.
Lubwama and his wife embraced the challenge, exploring hearing aids, cochlear implants, and learning sign language. He now speaks with immense pride about his now four-year-old daughter, expressing confidence in her potential and even envisioning her becoming the “first deaf doctor.”
His experience has led him to advocate for open communication and support within families and the sporting community. Lubwama urges athletes to speak out about their challenges and encourages society to foster environments of understanding and acceptance, emphasizing that love and support are crucial for children facing similar circumstances.
This story of transformation highlights Lubwama’s strength, moving from profound fear to acceptance and hope, demonstrating that dreams can adapt and retain their value, and that personal struggles can ultimately fuel a powerful message of resilience and love.
