The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has voiced strong opposition to the recent arrest of its lawyer, Erias Lukwago. The party characterized the action by security operatives as a deliberate attempt at intimidation and a clear infringement upon fundamental human rights and the rule of law.
Lukwago, known for representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, was reportedly apprehended on Thursday morning at his home in Wakaliga, a suburb of Kampala. Reports indicate that security personnel surrounded his residence before taking him to an undisclosed location, reportedly seizing several documents in the process.
This development unfolds while Dr. Besigye is engaged in a legal dispute against General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and other security officials. The case involves contentious allegations, including Besigye’s supposed arrest in Kenya, alongside Sheikh Obeid Kamulegeya. Court documents show that the respondents are due to submit their defense by June 18, 2026, preceding a hearing scheduled for June 30, 2026.
FDC leaders have directly linked Lukwago’s arrest to this ongoing legal challenge. They expressed concerns that the timing suggests potential interference with judicial proceedings and an effort to obstruct effective legal representation for Dr. Besigye.
Robert Centenary, FDC Deputy Chairperson for the Western Region, speaking for the party, condemned the arrest and the seizure of legal materials. He stated, “This is a clear act of intimidation not only against Lukwago but also against all legal practitioners and Ugandans seeking justice through lawful means.”
The FDC urged security agencies to conduct themselves with fairness and impartiality regarding Dr. Besigye’s case, emphasizing the need to uphold judicial independence and protect civil liberties.
In addition to condemning the arrest, FDC officials also took the opportunity to critique the recently approved national budget, valued at approximately shs 84 trillion. They argued that it imposes a substantial financial burden on ordinary citizens, particularly those with low incomes, and inadequately addresses critical socio-economic issues.
The party called for a revision of governmental fiscal priorities and the implementation of measures to alleviate financial strain on vulnerable populations. As of the time of this report, security agencies had not provided an official statement regarding Lukwago’s arrest or his current whereabouts, fueling further concern among human rights advocates and opposition figures.
This incident exacerbates existing political tensions between opposition groups and state security apparatuses, prompting renewed calls for adherence to constitutional principles, respect for human rights, and the safeguarding of the rule of law. https://nilepost.co.ug/news/348764/fdc-condemns-arrest-of-lawyer-erias-lukwago-calls-it-intimidation
