Ugandan comedian Don Andre, born Andrew Odongo, recently captivated audiences at the National Theatre with his latest stand-up special, “The American Dream.” Building on the success of his earlier show “Unemployed But Funny,” this performance showcased a more mature and confident Andre, highlighting his growth as a sharp writer and a significant figure in the burgeoning Ugandan comedy circuit.
“The American Dream” cleverly explores the aspirational fantasies and humorous misconceptions Ugandans often hold about life abroad. Andre’s portrayal of America isn’t the land of instant success, but rather a place where even hardship appears more comfortable than domestic prosperity. A notable routine humorously depicted struggling Americans living with large televisions and readily available fast food, tapping into a relatable Ugandan yearning for even a more comfortable form of poverty.
Further routines delved into the absurdities of wanting to die in America due to the seemingly more organized Hollywood funeral scenes, contrasting them with the often chaotic realities of local burials. Andre also found comedy in the relatable anxieties surrounding pregnancy scares and the disposal of condoms, escalating the premise into increasingly hilarious scenarios. The universally recognized Ugandan experience of hitchhiking also provided ample material, with Andre exploring the nuances of transportation etiquette.
Throughout the nearly two-hour showcase, Andre’s material felt fresh and relevant, eschewing recycled internet jokes for keen observations, engaging storytelling, and everyday experiences. His delivery was conversational, making the audience feel like active participants in his comedic narratives. The evening was further elevated by strong supporting performances from comedians Daniel Omara, Jack Rothomio, Sundiata, and Hillary Okello, all hosted expertly by Uncle Mark.
“The American Dream” proved that Don Andre is no longer just an emerging talent but a formidable headliner capable of commanding a major stage with original and universally relatable comedy. The show served as a testament to the vitality of Uganda’s stand-up comedy scene.
