Vendors in Wakiso District have a renewed sense of hope as the government initiates the construction of two state-of-the-art markets, collectively costing Shs37 billion. The projects, Wakiso Central Daily Market and Kawuku Market, are expected to nearly double the capacity for local traders, offering a much-needed solution to long-standing workspace shortages.

Funded by the World Bank under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), the new markets are being constructed by Techno Three (U) Limited (Shs20.3 billion) and Scaffold Construction Company (Shs16.7 billion). For years, vendors operated from rudimentary stalls, frequently disrupted by adverse weather conditions like heavy rains and intense sunshine, which impacted both their ability to work and the quality of their produce.

The modern facilities promise a significant upgrade, featuring a comprehensive range of amenities. These include dedicated stalls and lock-up shops, modern sanitation, ample parking, efficient garbage management systems, freezer rooms, and even essential services like a daycare center, a skilling center, restaurants, and banking facilities.

Wakiso Central Daily Market, currently accommodating 400 vendors, is projected to expand its capacity to 800. Similarly, Kawuku Market will grow from its current 370 vendors to over 700. This expansion is anticipated to provide workspace for traders who have been displaced by ongoing eviction orders, offering them a stable environment for their businesses.

Local leaders expressed optimism about the positive impact on sales and vendor livelihoods. The improved infrastructure is expected to attract a better clientele, particularly for Kawuku Market, which is strategically located along the busy route to Entebbe International Airport. State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye, urged all vendors to participate in the registration process for the new markets, warning that political affiliations should not hinder their access to these vital economic hubs.
