Dr. Jim Muhwezi, a former Minister of Security, has strongly refuted claims suggesting that the Ugandan government provided weapons to the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) during the period leading up to the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath.

International media outlets and human rights organizations have previously raised these allegations, which Dr. Muhwezi characterized as “cooked stories” and propaganda. He asserted that such narratives are designed to undermine Uganda’s reputation and that there is no credible evidence to support them.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Muhwezi emphasized Uganda’s role in fostering regional peace and stability, suggesting that the country has historically been a facilitator of dialogue and reconciliation, not an instigator of conflict. He highlighted Uganda’s commitment to good neighborly relations within the East African region.

The former minister stressed that the narrative of Uganda supplying arms is a misrepresentation of historical events. He pointed to the complexities of the Rwandan situation and the involvement of various actors, implying that blame is being unfairly placed on Uganda.

Dr. Muhwezi’s strong rebuttal aims to set the record straight, countering what he describes as persistent and unfounded accusations that have circulated for years. He called for a more objective and evidence-based approach when discussing the historical context of the Rwandan crisis and Uganda’s involvement.
