Thousands of New York Knicks fans flooded the streets of Manhattan late Saturday night to celebrate the team’s hard-fought NBA Finals win, marking their first championship since 1973. The ecstatic atmosphere, however, quickly devolved into chaos as some fans took to more destructive forms of celebration.

Reports indicate that a World Cup shuttle bus, originally hired to transport soccer fans from a match between Brazil and Morocco, was set alight in Times Square. The incident occurred as large crowds, having spilled out of bars and viewing venues, converged on the buses. Some individuals climbed onto the buses, entered them, and even occupied the driver’s seats. This particular bus was seen engulfed in flames, though no injuries were immediately reported from that specific incident.

Beyond the bus fire, the celebrations saw widespread use of fireworks and smoke grenades, with chants of “Knicks in five!” echoing through the night. The revelry turned more serious when a 17-year-old male was shot in the foot in Times Square during the festivities. Police have taken three persons of interest into custody in connection with the shooting.

Authorities initially maintained a holding pattern, fencing off streets, but eventually deployed officers in riot gear to disperse the unruly crowds. Mounted police were also seen pushing back jubilant but disruptive fans. Eyewitnesses described the scene as reminiscent of New Year’s Eve, but amplified, with individuals playing drums, hugging strangers, and scaling scaffolding and traffic lights.

The Knicks’ victory over the San Antonio Spurs signifies a monumental achievement for the franchise and its fanbase, who have waited decades for another championship title. For many, like long-time fans Dean and Christina Smiros, it was a win that occurred within their lifetime, unlike previous victories.

This vibrant, albeit tumultuous, display of fan passion underscores the deep connection New Yorkers have with their sports teams. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in managing large-scale public celebrations, especially when they intersect with other events, such as the earlier World Cup soccer match.
