Authorities in Kira Division have apprehended a suspect and seized a taxi believed to be instrumental in a string of passenger robberies within the Kampala Metropolitan Area. The arrested individual, identified as 47-year-old Muwonge Isma, was taken into custody on June 12, 2026.
The investigation was prompted by a robbery report filed by a 20-year-old student on June 11, 2026. The student recounted boarding a white taxi, registration number UAW 401G, at Najeera Shell station. After being asked to exit the vehicle under the pretense of a malfunctioning door, he discovered his mobile phone had been stolen.
Further police inquiries revealed the same taxi had been implicated in a similar incident on May 27, 2026, along the Northern Bypass. In that case, a female passenger was reportedly robbed of her belongings.
Officers sighted the suspect vehicle on June 12 in Namugongo and initiated a pursuit when the driver failed to stop. The taxi was eventually intercepted along the Northern Bypass. A search of the vehicle yielded a panga and a large stone, which investigators suspect were used as tools to intimidate victims.
Police believe the arrested suspect may have worked with accomplices who are still at large and are urging the public to report any encounters with the vehicle or similar incidents. The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue to uncover the full scope of their alleged criminal activities.
