Defending champions Buweekula began their 2026 Airtel Masaza Cup title defense with a disappointing goalless draw against Kyaddondo. The opening match, held at the National Teachers College Grounds in Mubende, saw the champions struggle to break down a resolute Kyaddondo defense.
Despite enjoying territorial advantage for much of the game, Buweekula’s attacking efforts rarely tested the Kyaddondo goalkeeper. The visitors’ midfield general, Trevor Kalule, was instrumental in their defensive efforts, earning him the Man of the Match award for his industrious performance and tactical discipline.
This result underscores a long-standing trend in the Masaza Cup, where no team has successfully retained the trophy since 2004. The pressure is now on Buweekula’s coach Ibrahim Kyobe to navigate this historical challenge.
“It is still a long competition and we have only played one game,” stated Kyobe. “We know defending this title will not be easy because every team wants to beat the champions, but we shall keep working and improving.”
The tournament also officially launched its 2026 edition with the theme, “Men Must Take the Lead in the Fight against HIV/AIDS to Save the Girl Child.” The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, emphasized the role of sports in promoting unity and delivering vital health messages across the kingdom.
Action continues this weekend with nine more fixtures scheduled for the Airtel Masaza Cup.
