The critical fight against the ongoing Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain has received a significant boost with a $250,000 humanitarian donation from global cryptocurrency exchange Binance. This substantial contribution will be split evenly, with half directed to the Uganda Red Cross Society and the other half to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
Both recipient organizations are renowned for their extensive experience in emergency response and are already actively engaged in affected and high-risk communities across Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The funding is particularly crucial given the absence of a specific vaccine or approved treatment for this strain of Ebola, placing immense pressure on health systems in eastern DRC and the surrounding region.
Binance’s financial injection will fund essential interventions, including emergency medical care, contact tracing efforts, containment strategies, and the provision of vital sanitation supplies and protective equipment for frontline health workers. A key focus will be on reaching underserved and high-risk areas where access to healthcare, protective gear, and accurate public health information is limited.
Community awareness and prevention campaigns will also receive support, aiming to curb transmission rates and build local resilience against the virus. Richard Teng, co-CEO of Binance, emphasized the importance of supporting frontline responders, stating, “We are proud to support both the Uganda Red Cross Society and Doctors without Borders as they work to protect vulnerable populations and deliver urgent care where it is needed most.”
Officials from both organizations highlighted the timely nature of the donation. Robert Kwesiga, Secretary General of the Uganda Red Cross Society, noted, “The support from Binance comes in so timely and handy, and will help us respond more rapidly, reach more at-risk communities, and reinforce the frontline services needed to help contain the outbreak and save lives.” Trish Newport, MSF Emergency Programme Manager, expressed concern over the rapid spread and the challenges faced in regions like Ituri, where insecurity and limited healthcare access amplify the need for swift action.
This donation aligns with Binance’s broader commitment to community well-being across Africa, extending beyond its core business operations. The company is encouraging other regional businesses to partner in humanitarian efforts during crises.
As Ugandan and DRC authorities, along with international and local responders, intensify their efforts to contain the Bundibugyo outbreak, this funding from Binance provides much-needed resources to dedicated teams working under challenging circumstances.
