African Unity Hindered by 'Afrophobia', Says Commentator

The vision of a united Africa, a dream long championed by its leaders, faces a significant internal obstacle: ‘Afrophobia’. This term describes the prejudice and mistreatment that Africans sometimes inflict upon their fellow continentals.

This pervasive issue, far from being an isolated incident, actively corrodes the foundation of Pan-Africanism. Decades of diplomatic efforts, economic cooperation agreements, and shared cultural initiatives aimed at bringing African nations closer are systematically weakened when citizens face discrimination, violence, or xenophobia in other African countries.

The commentator highlights that this internal division distracts from external challenges and opportunities. Instead of presenting a cohesive front on the global stage, internal animosities and barriers create fissures that can be exploited and prevent collective progress. The free movement of people and goods, a cornerstone of continental integration, is often hampered by these hostile sentiments.

Addressing ‘Afrophobia’ requires a multi-pronged approach, involving education, policy reforms, and the active promotion of a shared African identity. Without confronting and dismantling these internal prejudices, the lofty goals of a truly integrated and prosperous Africa will remain elusive. It is a call to action for Africans to embrace solidarity and recognize their shared destiny, recognizing that the strength of the continent lies in its unity, not its divisions.
