US and Iran Near Peace Deal Amid Tensions Near Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran have signaled an imminent agreement to end their protracted conflict, with both sides reportedly agreeing on a text intended to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz. However, hostilities flared as U.S. forces downed Iranian drones near the strategically vital waterway. An end to the ongoing war between the United States and Iran appears to be on the horizon, with senior officials from both nations suggesting a peace deal is within reach. A U.S. administration official indicated that an agreement on the text has been reached and Washington anticipates signing an initial accord in the coming days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi declared that his country emerged from the conflict stronger, stating, “Iran is the winner of the war with the U.S.” This assertion came shortly after U.S. forces intercepted several Iranian drones targeting the Strait of Hormuz, a move confirmed by U.S. Central Command, which also stated the crucial shipping lane remained open.

Reports from Iranian news agencies detailed explosions near Sirik port and Qeshm island, which were attributed by local officials to Iranian forces issuing warnings to vessels attempting unauthorized passage. The proposed memorandum of understanding reportedly includes the reopening of the strait and the lifting of a U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. Subsequent negotiations would address Iran’s controversial nuclear program.

Discussions around the draft proposal suggest terms potentially favoring Iran, a point U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly dismissed. Key elements under consideration include the release of billions in frozen Iranian assets, waivers on oil export sanctions, and Iran opening the Strait of Hormuz. The deal also outlines a 60-day period for talks on Iran’s nuclear program, with the U.S. aiming for its dismantling.

However, differing accounts exist regarding the nuclear program’s specifics, with Iran reportedly preferring to retain its enriched uranium in diluted form rather than dismantle it entirely. The U.S. official stressed a “performance-based deal” where funds are released and sanctions lifted contingent on Iran’s actions, including ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open and halting support for certain groups.

Israel, not a party to the negotiations, has indicated it would not be bound by the agreement, despite potential implications for its military actions in Lebanon. The prospect of a peace accord has impacted global markets, with oil prices falling sharply as tensions in the Gulf, marked by recent escalatory exchanges, appear to be de-escalating on the diplomatic front.

This development comes as the conflict has presented political challenges for the White House, with rising fuel prices and declining approval ratings. The deal’s perceived favorability towards Iran could also be a difficult point for Republicans ahead of upcoming elections.
