The Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) has expressed frustration with the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) and its president, Moses Muhangi, for allegedly disregarding directives from the Minister of Sports regarding the consolidation of boxing governance.

A letter from the National Council of Sports (NCS) in April granted UBF exclusive oversight of all boxing activities, a move UPBC argues contradicts the resolutions from a February 27 meeting with Minister Peter Ogwang.

These resolutions aimed to establish a single federation covering both amateur and professional boxing, as mandated by the National Sports Act 2023. Key directives included UBF completing its registration, incorporating professional aspects, and ensuring UPBC’s representation in leadership.

UPBC’s attempt to convene a stakeholder meeting on May 22 was rejected by UBF, with Muhangi stating that the matter was solely between UBF and NCS. UPBC leaders, including President Eddie Bazira and Legal Committee head Peter Lubulwa, view this as an obstruction to the sport’s progress and an invalid interpretation of the Sports Act.

Lubulwa specifically called out the NCS for wrongly assigning professional boxing oversight to UBF and suggested that UBF needs to hold new elections under its 2013 constitution to enable lawful engagement with UPBC for constitutional amendments. He appealed to the government for guidance to resolve the impasse and ensure inclusivity for all boxing stakeholders.
