Uganda’s brightest young table tennis prospects, Joseph Sebatindira and Patience Anyango, recently competed in the WTT Youth Contender Helsingborg 2026 in Sweden, returning with valuable insights despite not securing any medals.

Coach Alvin Katumba noted that while Sebatindira, a former multiple U11 champion, showed promise in the U13 category, adapting to this higher level requires more effort. He successfully topped his U13 boys’ singles group but was narrowly defeated in the quarterfinals. Sebatindira also participated in the U15 boys’ singles, reaching the Round of 16.

Patience Anyango, the reigning African U12 champion, faced tough competition in the U13 girls’ singles, failing to advance past the group stage. Her performance in the U15 girls’ singles saw her reach the Round of 16 before being eliminated. The U15 mixed doubles also proved challenging for the Ugandan pair.

Coach Katumba emphasized that the tournament highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in tactical play. He stated, “We picked up some lessons that as we improve, others also improve, and thus we must keep working 100%.”

The experience gained in Sweden will be instrumental as the young athletes prepare for the upcoming African Youth Championships next month. The team is utilizing a short training camp to address weaknesses and sharpen their skills in game situations, aiming for better results on the continental stage.
