Uganda’s Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA) has achieved significant international recognition by securing ISO certifications in three key areas: information security, ICT service delivery, and quality management. This accomplishment positions the PPDA among global institutions adhering to the highest standards for safeguarding information and optimizing operational efficiency.
The certifications aim to enhance transparency, accountability, and the security of crucial public procurement data, which includes financial details, supplier records, and contract information. This aligns with the government’s broader agenda to accelerate digital transformation across public institutions for improved service delivery and fiscal accountability.
The milestone was celebrated at a handover ceremony attended by government officials, development partners, and key stakeholders in the procurement sector. The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, who was the guest of honour, lauded the PPDA’s achievement.
Minister Lumumba encouraged all government entities to adopt international standards and leverage the recently launched Public Procurement Portal. She emphasized the critical nature of protecting sensitive data handled within public procurement to ensure fairness, transparency, and value for money. She also called on other public institutions to emulate the PPDA’s commitment to best practices.
PPDA Executive Director Benson Turamye highlighted that the new Public Procurement Portal is a significant step towards enhancing disclosure, transparency, and public oversight. The platform is designed to facilitate media and civil society engagement, improve access to procurement information, and manage public procurement processes representing 18% of Uganda’s GDP.
Officials anticipate that this integration of digital reforms and international standards will strengthen confidence in Uganda’s public procurement system. By bolstering data security, reducing inefficiencies, and promoting greater accountability, the PPDA is contributing to the more effective management of public resources.
This development underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology and international best practices to enhance public service delivery and ensure the prudent use of public funds.
