A recent court decision in Lyantonde District regarding a protracted cattle theft case has ignited controversy within Rwamiramira Village. Locals and family members of the four men convicted are expressing discontent, asserting that the magistrate’s verdict did not fully align with the evidence presented during the trial.

The case, which began in 2024, centers on accusations by Ms. Jolly Murombe against Abaho Enock, Godfrey Kanuhangire, Elias Kibanda, and Joram Muhwezi for the theft of her cattle. Court proceedings revealed that approximately 13 cows were recovered from the farm of Cyprian Kabeera Gasana, a local resident who also claims ownership of some of the animals.

On Wednesday, Grade One Magistrate Ramadhan Wandera Akiiki sentenced the convicted individuals to three years and six months in prison. In addition to the prison sentences, the court ordered that Ms. Murombe be compensated Shs28 million and that the disputed cattle be returned to her. Ms. Murombe stated her satisfaction with the court’s determination of ownership.

However, the ruling has been met with strong opposition from several villagers and relatives of the accused. Cyprian Kabeera Gasana, who claims he had sufficient proof of ownership for some of the cattle, announced his intention to appeal the decision. He alleged that the court did not give adequate time to his side of the evidence and that the proceedings felt rushed.

Other residents echoed Kabeera’s sentiments, stating that they were familiar with some of the cattle and believed they belonged to him. Kiconco Midius, mother of one of the convicted men, appealed for government intervention, highlighting the distress the ruling has caused to the families.

Lyantonde Resident District Commissioner David Asaba Nkojo confirmed that the court’s orders were being implemented and that 12 cows had already been returned to Ms. Murombe. He advised those dissatisfied with the verdict to pursue legal avenues through appeals in higher courts.
