For years, artist Doddridge Busingye’s canvases reflected the bustling energy of youth, the complexities of politics, and the gritty realities of urban life. However, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns brought an unfamiliar stillness to his world, prompting a significant shift in his creative process. Instead of seeking external subjects, Busingye turned his gaze inward, using the enforced quietude as an opportunity for self-examination.
As a child, Busingye’s fascination with art was nurtured through informal observation. His older brother’s sketches adorned their shared room, and inspired by storybooks, he began illustrating Bible stories. This early exposure taught him the power of visual communication; a well-placed drawing could convey messages more subtly and effectively than words.
His talent gained recognition during his school years, leading to paid commissions and design work. After completing his master’s degree in 2019, Busingye’s work predominantly featured social commentary and portraiture, capturing the vibrancy and tensions he observed in society. A pivotal moment came in 2018 at the Kampala Art Biennale, where exposure to installation art broadened his understanding of artistic mediums and their expressive potential.
When lockdown descended, Busingye confronted the question of what remains when the external world falls silent. This introspection led him to explore themes of mental health, loneliness, vulnerability, and personal identity. His focus shifted from depicting societal fractures to examining his own. This inward journey culminated in a triptych self-portrait, ‘Tender, the Fractured and the Quietly Extraordinary,’ which visually narrates a progression from fragility to resilience.
Even when addressing political themes, his approach became more restrained, favoring suggestion over overt statements. Busingye believes in the responsible use of imagery, carefully considering its potential impact. He continues to describe himself as an ‘upcoming’ artist, viewing his creative journey as a continuous process of growth and self-discovery. His artistic output during isolation has garnered international attention, confirming his belief that authenticity lies in embracing change and evolving his craft.
Through this period of isolation, Busingye’s art has evolved from outward observation to a deeper understanding of his place within the world, marking a significant and ongoing transformation in his artistic practice.
