An intelligence-led operation by police in Mityana District has resulted in the rescue of 48 dogs from several unsanctioned animal shelters. The crackdown, conducted on June 12, 2026, in Busimbi Division, was prompted by an outcry from local residents concerned about the welfare of the animals and potential public health risks.
According to Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, the rescued dogs were found in deplorable conditions. “Several of the rescued dogs were found in a worrying condition. Some had broken limbs, others had their tails cut off, while many appeared severely malnourished,” Kigozi stated.
Adding to the concern, none of the animals possessed verifiable vaccination records, raising fears of disease transmission and posing a significant risk to the community. “The absence of vaccination records made the situation even more concerning. These animals were being kept in conditions that threatened both their welfare and the safety of surrounding communities,” Kigozi added.
The 48 dogs have since been transferred to Animal Lifeline Uganda, a registered welfare organization operating a facility in the same division. Officials from the organization pledged to provide immediate medical attention, vaccinations, and proper care to the rescued animals. They also plan to make the dogs available for adoption once they have recovered and been thoroughly assessed.
Three suspects were apprehended during the operation and are expected to face charges related to animal cruelty. Authorities are sending a clear message that such mistreatment will not be tolerated and are urging anyone involved in animal care to adhere to legal procedures and welfare standards.
This action is part of a broader intensification of efforts in Mityana to combat animal abuse, neglect, and potential exploitation schemes within the district.
