Traders in Wakiso are celebrating the start of construction on a modern Shs20.3 billion market, a facility that has been promised for over a decade. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Wakiso Central Daily Market marks a significant milestone after years of operating in congested and inadequate conditions.

The project, being implemented under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), is expected to significantly improve the trading environment for hundreds of vendors.

During the launch, officials cautioned local governments against project delays, noting that such inefficiencies can lead to the loss of vital development funds. “Government has on several occasions been forced to recall funds because some districts fail to implement projects within the required timelines,” stated Monica Edemacu, Under Secretary in the Ministry of Greater Kampala Metropolitan Affairs. She also warned contractors against unfair treatment of local workers.

Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, urged traders to embrace hygiene and professional standards once the market is complete. “A clean market attracts customers. Vendors, especially those dealing in food, should maintain personal hygiene and keep their workspaces clean,” he advised.

The Wakiso District Chairperson, Ian Kyeyune, called for quality work from the contractor, Techno Three Uganda Limited, emphasizing the need for a facility that will serve traders for many years. Meanwhile, the Chief Administrative Officer, Mark Jude Bukenya, warned against the illegal allocation of market stalls, assuring that offenders would face legal action.

The new market is slated for completion within 12 months and will feature amenities such as parking areas, a vocational training centre, a childcare facility, and salons. Vendors have been temporarily relocated to a nearby site to facilitate the construction process.
