Uganda’s extensive experience in managing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreaks provides a significant advantage in its current preparedness efforts. The country has faced multiple incursions of the virus, most notably in 2000 with the Gulu and Masindi outbreaks, and more recently in 2019 in the Kasese District.

These past encounters have allowed Uganda to develop robust surveillance systems, rapid response teams, and effective contact tracing protocols. The knowledge gained from these previous outbreaks is invaluable, enabling health officials to quickly identify potential cases, isolate infected individuals, and prevent widespread transmission.

Unlike airborne viruses, Ebolaviruses spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, including blood, vomit, and feces, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. This mode of transmission, while serious, is more manageable with well-established infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. Uganda’s healthcare workers are trained in these critical protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe burial practices.

The country has also invested in laboratory capacity for rapid diagnostic testing, reducing the time it takes to confirm cases and initiate appropriate public health interventions. Furthermore, strong community engagement and trust built through prior outbreak responses are crucial for ensuring compliance with control measures and facilitating effective communication during emergencies.

While the threat of Ebola remains, Uganda’s accumulated expertise and established infrastructure offer a solid foundation for containing future outbreaks and protecting public health. Lessons learned from Gulu, Masindi, and Kasese continue to inform and strengthen the nation’s resilience against this deadly disease.
