The royal household of Thailand has announced the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha, who had been in a coma since December 2022. The princess’s health had been declining despite intensive medical care.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha collapsed while exercising, with doctors attributing her condition to a severe heart arrhythmia caused by a mycoplasma infection. Her passing at Chulalongkorn Hospital marks the end of a life dedicated to public service and advocacy.
Born in 1978, she was the eldest child of King Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali. The princess was highly educated, holding two postgraduate degrees from Cornell University in the United States. She embarked on a career in law and diplomacy, serving briefly at the Thai mission to the UN in New York and later as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria.
Throughout her career, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was a vocal advocate for legal and penal reform, particularly focusing on the rights of women in prison. She also played a significant role in promoting the rule of law in Southeast Asia through her work with the UNODC.
Her capabilities and the apparent trust placed in her by her father made her a prominent figure in discussions about the royal succession. While Thai law allows for a female monarch, the path to succession has long been a subject of speculation, especially given the King’s age and other potential heirs.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha’s death creates uncertainty surrounding Thailand’s future leadership, a topic heavily constrained by the country’s strict lese majeste laws. Her absence leaves a void in the royal family and among those who saw her as a potential successor or regent.
