A cemetery in the Sudanese city of El-Obeid became the scene of tragedy on Wednesday evening when a drone strike hit a funeral procession. The attack, which rights organizations Sudan Doctors Network and Emergency Lawyers say was carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), killed at least four people and left several others wounded.
Emergency Lawyers reported that this incident is part of a broader series of drone strikes that began on Wednesday, claiming a total of at least 23 lives. The RSF has not yet issued a statement regarding the accusations.
El-Obeid, currently under army control, is a critical battleground in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which erupted between the army and the RSF leadership over the country’s future direction. The conflict has escalated into what is described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, displacing over 11 million people and leaving 28 million facing severe hunger.
Beyond the funeral strike, Emergency Lawyers detailed further attacks by drones on residential areas, the airport district, and vicinity of an army base. These strikes reportedly killed thirteen civilians who were near damaged homes. Earlier attacks contributed an additional five civilian deaths, according to the group.
Residents described scenes of destruction, with one telling AFP, “The roofs of houses collapsed on their occupants. When you look at some houses, you feel no-one could have survived.”
In a separate incident on Thursday, a lorry driver transporting food supplies was killed when his vehicle was struck. Both Emergency Lawyers and Sudan Doctors Network have highlighted what they describe as systematic and repeated attacks on civilians in El-Obeid over several days.
The city’s strategic importance in the oil-rich Kordofan region makes it a key front line in the war, situated between RSF-controlled western territories and army-dominated eastern areas. Analysts suggest control of this region is vital for managing the country’s oil supply and exerting influence over a significant portion of Sudan.
