A cloud of concern has descended upon Mbale City following the discovery of another young female teenager dead in her room, suspected to be a suicide. Vanisa Namakoye, a Senior Five student at Mbale Progressive Secondary School, was found hanging in her home on Thursday night.

The tragedy occurred just days after 16-year-old Catherine Nelima was found dead in a similar suspected suicide incident in the same ward. Police have confirmed that Namakoye and Nelima were close friends, intensifying the local anxiety.

According to Elgon regional police spokesperson Rogers Taitika, preliminary investigations suggest Namakoye may have died between 10:30 pm and midnight. The events leading up to the discovery reportedly involved a dispute with her younger sister over Shs 10,000, which the sister lost. Namakoye is alleged to have assaulted her sibling, prompting intervention from their grandmother.

Later, Namakoye’s mother, Juliet Natulal, attempted to speak with her daughter after being informed of the altercation. However, the teenager had locked herself in her room and was unresponsive. Upon returning home with her husband shortly before midnight, they found Namakoye deceased.

Police and crime scene officers processed the scene and have taken the body to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Authorities are urging parents, guardians, and community leaders to be vigilant and supportive of young people facing emotional or psychological distress, as these incidents highlight a worrying trend in the city.
