Residents of Kisoro District are reeling following the arrest of Allan Muhumuza, 26, on suspicion of sexually abusing his five-year-old daughter.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and brought child protection issues to the forefront.

According to reports, the child had been living with her grandmother and siblings for the past two years after her parents’ separation. The suspect’s mother, Topista Nyirandezi, alerted local leaders to her concerns about her son’s conduct towards his children.

Nyirandezi stated that previous interventions by community leaders had occurred concerning his behavior. The latest incident last week prompted swift action from local authorities and residents, leading to the matter being reported to the police.

Muhumuza was apprehended by officers at a construction site where he reportedly works as a mason, after initially evading arrest.

Christopher Tabaro, the LC1 Chairperson for Burere Village, described Muhumuza as a difficult individual, noting that even local police sometimes require backup from Kisoro Central Police to deal with him.

“Muhumuza is a very stubborn person. Even police from Muramba Sub-county fear him. They have to request additional deployment from Kisoro Central Police if they are to arrest him,” Tabaro commented.

Gideon Mfitumukiza, head of the Children and Family Protection Unit in Kisoro, has condemned the alleged crime and stressed the importance of prioritizing child safety. He urged the community to report any suspected cases of abuse to the authorities without delay.

Kisoro District Police Commander, SP Cosmas Edatu, confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations are nearing completion, with the case file set to be forwarded to court.

Commander Edatu also mentioned a separate ongoing investigation into another alleged abuse case involving a minor in Nyakinama Sub-county, with another suspect in custody.

Investigations into both cases are continuing.
