Tehran has pushed back against claims by US President Donald Trump that a deal to end the current conflict was close to being signed. Trump had stated that negotiators had “just made a great settlement” with Iran and suggested a signing ceremony in Europe could take place soon.
However, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, dismissed these reports as “speculative,” emphasizing that “nothing has been finalised.” He indicated that while much of the memorandum’s text was agreed upon, the US had presented “excessive demands” and “new requests.”
The United States and Iran have been engaged in intermittent exchanges of fire since agreeing to a ceasefire in April, following wider strikes on Iran in February. These recent tensions have impacted global oil markets, with Brent crude prices falling.
Trump had previously threatened strong military action against Iran but then pivoted to announcing a potential breakthrough, stating the deal would prevent Iran from ever acquiring nuclear weapons. He also suggested that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen once the agreement was signed.
Despite Trump’s optimistic statements and claims of support from regional allies like Israel, Iran maintains it will not compromise on its “red lines.” Israeli Prime Minister’s office confirmed communication but noted Israel was “not a party to the memorandum of understanding,” while expressing support for an agreement that includes specific terms regarding Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.
This situation follows a pattern where Trump has previously suggested deals were close but they did not materialize. The ongoing negotiations aim to resolve conflicts and address security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
